คำอธิบาย
This explanation is only an example of how the saying may be interpreted; it is not an answer key. Learners should use it as preliminary guidance only. For a fuller understanding, please also study the Tipiṭaka and other scriptures.

The saying "yo ca vassasataṃ jīve duppañño asamāhito, ekāhaṃ jīvitaṃ seyyo paññavantassa jhāyino" means "Though one should live a hundred years, foolish and unconcentrated, better is a single day's life of one who is wise and meditative." This saying teaches that the value of life is not measured by its length but by its quality, that is, by having wisdom and a steady mind.

"Unconcentrated" means a mind that is scattered, shaken by emotions and without concentration, while "meditative" means using a calm, steady mind to contemplate things as they really are. One who lives a hundred years without wisdom and with a scattered mind may spend his whole life in delusion and suffering without understanding life, while a wise person who has seen the truth of life, even for a single day, has gained something more valuable.

This statement is a comparison to emphasise the value of wisdom and concentration; it does not mean that a long life has no value, nor does it encourage wishing for a short life. On the contrary, one who understands this saying sees every day of life as a precious opportunity to develop wisdom and train the mind, and so should not let it pass in vain.

In daily life, someone who spends each day scrolling through entertainment without learning or developing himself may gain nothing more even after many years. But someone who sets aside time to reflect on himself, practise meditation and read useful books, even a little each day, has a life that grows in quality every day. A student who studies attentively and thinks deeply for just one hour may gain more understanding than one who sits daydreaming all day.

We should therefore wish both to live and to live wisely, preserving this life in order to do what is beneficial, training the mind to be calm and increasing our understanding of the Dhamma. Do not dwell on regret for days gone by until you forget to make today good, for the day on which we begin to know ourselves, begin to give up wrongdoing and begin to train the mind is a day of value, just as the saying goes: "Though one should live a hundred years, foolish and unconcentrated, better is a single day's life of one who is wise and meditative."
