สีลวรรค — หมวดศีล ๑๒ บท
อาทิ สีลํ ปติฏฺฐา จ กลฺยาณานญฺจ มาตุกํ / ปมุขํ สพฺพธมฺมานํ ตสฺมา สีลํ วิโสธเย.
Virtue is the first support, the mother of all good qualities, the chief of all things; therefore one should purify one’s virtue.
ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๕๘.
อวณฺณญฺจ อกิตฺติญฺจ ทุสฺสีโล ลภเต นโร / วณฺณํ กิตฺตึ ปสํสญฺจ สทา ลภติ สีลวา.
The immoral person receives blame and loss of reputation; the virtuous person always receives fame and praise.
ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๕๗.
อิเธว กิตฺตึ ลภติ เปจฺจ สคฺเค จ สุมโน / สพฺพตฺถ สุมโน ธีโร สีเลสุ สุสมาหิโต.
The wise one who is well established in virtue gains fame in this world, and when he has passed away rejoices in heaven — he is said to rejoice everywhere.
ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๕๘.
อิเธว นินฺทํ ลภติ เปจฺจาปาเย จ ทุมฺมโน / สพฺพตฺถ ทุมฺมโน พาโล สีเลสุ อสมาหิโต.
The fool who is not established in virtue is blamed in this world, and when he has passed away grieves in a state of woe — he is said to grieve everywhere.
ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๕๘.
กาเยน วาจาย จ โยธ สญฺญโต / มนสา จ กิญฺจิ น กโรติ ปาปํ / น อตฺตเหตุ อลิกํ ภณาติ / ตถาวิธํ สีลวนฺตํ วทนฺติ.
Whoever in this world is restrained in body, speech and mind, does no evil whatsoever, and does not speak rashly for his own sake — such a one they call virtuous.
ขุ. ชา. จตฺตาฬีส. ๒๗/๕๔๐.
ตสฺมา หิ นารี จ นโร จ สีลวา / อฏฺฐงฺคุเปตํ อุปวสฺสุโปสถํ / ปุญฺญานิ กตฺวาน สุขุทฺริยานิ / อนินฺทิตา สคฺคมุเปนฺติ ฐานํ.
Therefore virtuous women and men who keep the Uposatha with its eight factors, and make merit that yields happiness, are not blamed and go to a heavenly abode.
องฺ. ติก. ๒๐/๒๗๖.
น เวทา สมฺปรายาย น ชาติ นปิ พนฺธวา / สกญฺจ สีลสํสุทฺธํ สมฺปรายสุขาวหํ.
Spells, birth and kinsfolk cannot bring happiness in the world beyond; but one’s own well-purified virtue brings happiness in the world beyond.
ขุ. ชา. ปญฺจก. ๒๗/๑๗๕.
พหุสฺสุโตปิ เจ โหติ สีเลสุ สุสมาหิโต / อุภเยน นํ ปสํสนฺติ สีลโต จ สุเตน จ.
If one is learned and well established in virtue, the wise praise him for two qualities: for his virtue and for his learning.
องฺ. จตุกฺก. ๒๑/๙.
โย จ วสฺสสตํ ชีเว ทุสฺสีโล อสมาหิโต / เอกาหํ ชีวิตํ เสยฺโย สีลวนฺตสฺส ฌายิโน.
Though one without virtue and unsteady should live a hundred years, better is a single day in the life of one who is virtuous and meditative.
ขุ. ธ. ๒๕/๒๙.
สีลเมวิธ สิกฺเขถ อสฺมึ โลเก สุสิกฺขิตํ / สีลํ หิ สพฺพสมฺปตฺตึ อุปนาเมติ เสวิตํ.
One should train in virtue in this world; for virtue well trained and practised in this world brings every success.
ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๕๗.
สีลํ รกฺเขยฺย เมธาวี ปตฺถยาโน ตโย สุเข / ปสํสํ วิตฺติลาภญฺจ เปจฺจ สคฺเค ปโมทนํ.
The wise one who desires the three kinds of happiness — praise, the gaining of wealth, and rejoicing in heaven after death — should keep virtue.
ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๕๗.
สีลวา หิ พหู มิตฺเต สญฺญเมนาธิคจฺฉติ / ทุสฺสีโล ปน มิตฺเตหิ ธํสเต ปาปมาจรํ.
The virtuous gain many friends through their restraint; the unvirtuous, behaving badly, are estranged from their friends.
