คำอธิบาย
This explanation is only an example of how the saying may be interpreted; it is not an answer key. Learners should use it as preliminary guidance only. For a fuller understanding, please also study the Tipiṭaka and other scriptures.

The saying "yassa accantadussīlyaṃ māluvā sālamivotthataṃ karoti so tathattānaṃ yathā naṃ icchatī diso" means "Whoever is overspread by immorality, as a māluvā creeper covers a sāla tree, is said to make himself like one held captive by a villain." This saying shows the danger of being unvirtuous, that is, lacking precepts, with bodily and verbal conduct that is corrupt. The word "accantadussīlyaṃ" means extreme lack of virtue, or lack of virtue that overwhelms oneself completely. "Māluvā" is the māluvā creeper, a vine that winds around large trees; as it grows, it covers the tree until the tree finally breaks and falls. The final line, "yathā naṃ icchatī diso", literally means "just as an enemy wishes for him." The word "diso" means an enemy or one who wishes harm. The book translates it by its sense as "held captive by a villain," to make it vivid that the unvirtuous person falls into the very state his enemy wishes to see: bound by his own evil and not free. The key meaning of the verse is therefore that the unvirtuous person harms himself as much as an enemy would harm him.

In the Dhammapada commentary, this verse was spoken concerning Devadatta, who was envious and committed many evil deeds. Those evil deeds accumulated until they brought ruin upon himself. The Buddha therefore compared this, saying that lack of virtue overwhelms such a person like a māluvā creeper covering a sāla tree. The unvirtuous person harms himself as much as an enemy or villain would wish to do to him, without anyone else needing to harm him.

It should be noted that the simile of the māluvā creeper shows that evil often begins with something small and then gradually winds around until it is hard to undo, just as breaking the precepts starts from carelessness or habit, but if left alone becomes one's character. This saying does not condemn those who have once gone wrong, for one who becomes aware and returns to keeping the precepts can cut that creeper away. In the Dhamma teachings, virtue is the foundation of concentration and wisdom, so one whose virtue is deficient finds it hard to progress in the higher Dhamma.

In daily life, monks and novices who often neglect minor training rules may come to disrespect the Vinaya and fall away from the monastic state. A student who starts with small lies may have to pile lie upon lie until no one trusts him. A worker who commits fraud for the first time, thinking no one will know, may sink so deep that he loses both his job and his honour. All this harm arises from one's own actions.

We should therefore keep the precepts with appreciation of their value, constantly examine our own conduct, correct ourselves quickly when we realize we have gone wrong, not let wrong habits grow, and associate with those who help remind us to stay on the right path, for the unvirtuous person is his own enemy without knowing it, just as the saying goes: "Whoever is overspread by immorality, as a māluvā creeper covers a sāla tree, is said to make himself like one held captive by a villain."
