อนิจฺจา อทฺธุวา กามา พหุทุกฺขา มหาวิสา / อโยคุโฬว สนฺตตฺโต อฆมูลา ทุกฺขปฺผลา.
Sensual pleasures are impermanent, unstable, full of suffering, full of poison, like a red-hot lump of iron; they are the root of affliction and have suffering as their fruit.

อวิชฺชาย นิวุโต โลโก เววิจฺฉา ( ปมาทา ) นปฺปกาสติ / ชปฺปาภิเลปนํ พฺรูมิ ทุกฺขมสฺส มหพฺภยํ.
The world is shrouded by ignorance and does not appear, because of stinginess (and heedlessness); I declare desire to be the plaster of the world, and suffering its great danger.

อิจฺฉา นรํ ปริกสฺสติ อิจฺฉา โลกสฺมิ ทุชฺชหา / อิจฺฉาพทฺธา ปุถู สตฺตา ปาเสน สกุณี ยถา.
Desire drags people along; desire is hard to abandon in the world; many beings are bound by desire, like a hen-bird caught in a snare.

อุเปกฺขโก สทา สโต น โลเก มญฺญตี สมํ / น วิเสสี น นีเจยฺโย ตสฺส โน สนฺติ อุสฺสทา.
One who is equanimous and ever mindful, who does not regard himself as equal, superior or inferior to others in the world — he is said to have no swellings (of conceit).

อุจฺฉินฺนภวตณฺหสฺส สนฺตจิตฺตสฺส ภิกฺขุโน / วิกฺขีโณ ชาติสํสาโร นตฺถิ ตสฺส ปุนพฺภโว.
A monk who has uprooted the craving for existence, whose mind is at peace, who has ended the round of rebirth, has no further becoming.

เอตมาทีนวํ ญตฺวา ตณฺหา ทุกฺขสฺส สมฺภวํ / วีตตณฺโห อนาทาโน สโต ภิกฺขุ ปริพฺพเช.
A monk, knowing the danger thus — that craving is the source of suffering — should be free from craving, without clinging, and mindful in every posture.

กามา หิ จิตฺรา มธุรา มโนรมา / วิรูปรูเปน มเถนฺติ จิตฺตํ / อาทีนวํ กามคุเณสุ ทิสฺวา / เอโก จเร ขคฺควิสาณกปฺโป.
Sensual pleasures, colourful, sweet and delightful, oppress the mind in their various forms; seeing the danger in sensual pleasures, one should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn.

โกธํ ชเห วิปฺปชเหยฺย มานํ / สญฺโญชนํ สพฺพมติกฺกเมยฺย / ตํ นามรูปสฺมิมสชฺชมานํ / อกิญฺจนํ นานุปตนฺติ สงฺคา.
One should abandon anger, give up conceit and go beyond all fetters; (for) attachments do not follow one who is not attached to name and form and has nothing.

ตณฺหา ชเนติ ปุริสํ จิตฺตมสฺส วิธาวติ / สตฺโต สํสารมาปาทิ ทุกฺขา น ปริมุจฺจติ.
Craving gives birth to a person; his mind runs to and fro; the being still wanders on, and so is not freed from suffering.

One whose mind is set on Nibbāna should overcome sleep, sloth and torpor; he should not dwell in heedlessness nor take his stand in arrogance.

นิราสตฺตี อนาคเต อตีตํ นานุโสจติ / วิเวกทสฺสี ผสฺเสสุ ทิฏฺฐีสุ จ น นิยฺยติ.
One who does not brood over what has not yet come does not grieve over what is past; one who sees seclusion in all contacts is not led astray by views.

ปุราณํ นาภินนฺเทยฺย นเว ขนฺติมกุพฺพเย / หิยฺยมาเน น โสเจยฺย อากาสํ น สิโต สิยา.
One should not delight in the old, nor take pleasure in the new; when something passes away one should not grieve, nor depend on craving.
ขุ. สุ. ๒๕/๕๑๘.
มานุเปตา อยํ ปชา มานคนฺถา มานวินิพฺพทฺธา / ทิฏฺฐีสุ พฺยารมฺภกตา สํสารํ นาติวตฺตติ.
This race of beings is possessed of conceit, bound by conceit, tied fast by conceit; contending because of views, they cannot pass beyond the round of rebirth.
ขุ. อุ. ๒๕/๑๙๓.
มูฬฺโห อตฺถํ น ชานาติ มูฬฺโห ธมฺมํ น ปสฺสติ / อนฺธตมํ ตทา โหติ ยํ โมโห สหเต นรํ.
The deluded one does not know what is meaningful; the deluded one does not see the Dhamma; when delusion overcomes a person, then darkness prevails.
ขุ. อิติ. ๒๕/๒๙๖. ขุ. มหา. ๒๙/๑๘.
ยสฺส นตฺถิ อิทํ เมติ ปเรสํ วาปิ กิญฺจนํ / มมตฺตํ โส อสํวินฺทํ นตฺถิ เมติ น โสจติ.
Whoever has no concern that ‘this is mine, this is another’s’ — not taking anything as his own, he does not grieve that ‘I have nothing’.
ขุ. สุ. ๒๕/๕๑๙. ขุ. มหา. ๒๙/๕๓๔.
โยธ กาเม อจฺจตริ สงฺคํ โลเก ทุรจฺจยํ / น โส โสจติ นาชฺเฌติ ฉินฺนโสโต อพนฺธโน.
Whoever has crossed beyond sensual pleasures in the world and the entanglement so hard to cross — having cut the stream of craving, he has no bond; he is said neither to grieve nor to rejoice.

โย เว อวิทฺวา อุปธึ กโรติ / ปุนปฺปุนํ ทุกฺขมุเปติ มนฺโท / ตสฺมา ปชานํ อุปธึ น กยิรา / ทุกฺขสฺส ชาติปฺปภวานุปสฺสี.
Whoever, not knowing, creates substrates of existence is a fool who meets with suffering again and again; therefore one who understands, seeing the source of suffering, should not create substrates.

ลุทฺโธ อตฺถํ น ชานาติ ลุทฺโธ ธมฺมํ น ปสฺสติ / อนฺธตมํ ตทา โหติ ยํ โลโภ สหเต นรํ.
The greedy one does not know what is meaningful; the greedy one does not see the Dhamma; when greed overcomes a person, then darkness prevails.

วนํ ฉินฺทถ มา รุกฺขํ วนโต ชายตี ภยํ / เฉตฺวา วนญฺจ วนถญฺจ นิพฺพนา โหถ ภิกฺขโว.
Cut down the forest (of defilements), not the trees; from the forest arises danger. Monks! Having cut down the forest and the undergrowth, be without a forest.
