อกฺโกธโน อนุปนาหี อมกฺขี สุทฺธตํ คโต / สมฺปนฺนทิฏฺฐิ เมธาวี ตํ ชญฺญา อริโย อิติ.
Whoever is not angry, bears no grudge, does not disparage, has attained purity, is perfect in view and has wisdom — know that such a one is a noble one.
ขุ. ปฏิ. ๓๑/๒๔๑.
อกฺโกธสฺส กุโต โกโธ ทนฺตสฺส สมชีวิโน / สมฺมทญฺญา วิมุตฺตสฺส อุปสนฺตสฺส ตาทิโน.
For one who is free from anger, tamed, living evenly, liberated through right knowledge, peaceful and steady — whence could anger come?
ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๓๔.
อนาคตปฺปชปฺปาย อตีตสฺสานุโสจนา / เอเตน พาลา สุสฺสนฺติ นโฬว หริโต ลุโต.
The fool wastes away, brooding over what has not yet come and grieving over what is past, like a green reed that has been cut.

อนุทฺธโต อจปโล นิปโก สํวุตินฺทฺริโย / กลฺยาณมิตฺโต เมธาวี ทุกฺขสฺสนฺตกโร สิยา.
The clever one who is not agitated, not wavering, wise, restrained in the faculties and possessed of good friends may make an end of suffering.

อปฺปสฺสาทา ทุกฺขา กามา อิติ วิญฺญาย ปณฺฑิโต / อปิ ทิพฺเพสุ กาเมสุ รตึ โส นาธิคจฺฉติ.
Sensual pleasures give little enjoyment and much suffering; knowing this, the wise one takes no delight even in heavenly sensual pleasures.

อสฺสทฺโธ อกตญฺญู จ สนฺธิจฺเฉโท จ โย นโร / หตาวกาโส วนฺตาโส ส เว อุตฺตมโปริโส.
The person who does not believe (merely on hearsay), who knows the Unmade (Nibbāna), who has cut the links, destroyed the occasions and spat out hope — he is the supreme person.

อโยเค ยุญฺชมตฺตานํ โยคสฺมิญฺจ อโยชยํ / อตฺถํ หิตฺวา ปิยคฺคาหี ปิเหตตฺตานุโยคินํ.
One who applies himself to what should not be pursued and does not apply himself to what should be pursued, who abandons the goal and grasps at what pleases him, envies those who apply themselves rightly.

อสตญฺจ สตญฺจ ญตฺวา ธมฺมํ / อชฺฌตฺตํ พหิทฺธา จ สพฺพโลเก / เทวมนุสฺเสหิ จ ปูชิโต โย / โส สงฺคชาลมติจฺจ โส มุนิ.
Whoever knows the ways of the bad and of the good, both inwardly and outwardly, honoured by gods and humans in all the world — he has passed beyond the net of entanglement and is a sage.

อากาเสว ปทํ นตฺถิ สมโณ นตฺถิ พาหิเร / สงฺขารา สสฺสตา นตฺถิ นตฺถิ พุทฺธานมิญฺชิตํ.
There is no recluse outside (this teaching); there is no permanent conditioned thing; there is no wavering of the Buddhas — just as there is no footprint in the sky.

อุฏฺฐานวโต สตีมโต สุจิกมฺมสฺส นิสมฺมการิโน / สญฺญตสฺส จ ธมฺมชีวิโน อปฺปมตฺตสฺส ยโสภิวฑฺฒติ.
Honour grows for one who is diligent, mindful, pure in deed, who acts with consideration, is restrained, lives by the Dhamma and is heedful.
ขุ. ธ. ๒๕/๑๘.
อุตฺตมํ ธมฺมตํ ปตฺโต สพฺพโลเก อนตฺถิโก / อาทิตฺตาว ฆรา มุตฺโต มรณสฺมึ น โสจติ.
One who has attained the highest Dhamma and has no wants in all the world does not grieve at death, like one who has escaped from a burning house.
ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๗๐.
อุยฺยุญฺชนฺติ สตีมนฺโต น นิเกเต รมนฺติ เต / หํสาว ปลฺลลํ หิตฺวา โอกโมกํ ชหนฺติ เต.
The mindful ones go forth; they take no delight in a dwelling place; they abandon their dwelling as a swan abandons the marsh.
ขุ. ธ. ๒๕/๒๗.
กายมุนึ วาจามุนึ เจโตมุนิมนาสวํ / มุนึ โมเนยฺยสมฺปนฺนํ อาหุ สพฺพปหายินํ.
The wise call one who is silent in body, silent in speech, silent in mind, free from the taints, perfect in wisdom, who has abandoned everything — a sage.
องฺ. ติก. ๒๐/๓๕๒.
กายสุจึ วาจาสุจึ เจโตสุจิมนาสวํ / สุจึ โสเจยฺยสมฺปนฺนํ อาหุ นินฺหาตปาปกํ.
The wise call one who is pure in body, pure in speech, pure in mind, free from the taints, perfect in purity, who has washed away evil — a pure one.
องฺ. ติก. ๒๐/๓๕๒.
โกธโน อุปนาหี จ ปาปมกฺขี จ โย นโร / วิปนฺนทิฏฺฐิ มายาวี ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ.
Whoever is prone to anger, bears grudges, disparages others with evil, has corrupt views and is deceitful — know that such a one is base.
ขุ. สุ. ๒๕/๓๔๙.
ขตฺติยา พฺราหฺมณา เวสฺสา สุทฺทา จณฺฑาลปุกฺกุสา / สพฺเพว โสรตา ทนฺตา สพฺเพว ปรินิพฺพุตา.
Kshatriyas, brahmins, vaishyas, shudras, outcastes and low workers, all of them, having become calm and tamed, attain final Nibbāna alike.
ขุ. ชา. ปกิณฺณก. ๒๗/๓๗๖.
โจรํ หรนฺตํ วาเรนฺติ หรนฺโต สมโณ ปิโย / สมณํ ปุนปฺปุนายนฺตํ อภินนฺทนฺติ ปณฺฑิตา.
The wise obstruct a thief who carries things away, but a recluse who carries things away is beloved; the wise gladly welcome a recluse who comes often.
สํ. ส. ๒๕/๖๐.
ชยํ เวรํ ปสวติ ทุกฺขํ เสติ ปราชิโต / อุปสนฺโต สุขํ เสติ หิตฺวา ชยปราชยํ.
The victor breeds enmity; the defeated sleeps in misery; one who has given up both victory and defeat, being at peace, sleeps in happiness.
ขุ. ธ. ๒๕/๔๒.
ตสฺมา สตญฺจ อสตญฺจ นานา โหติ อิโต คติ / อสนฺโต นิรยํ ยนฺติ สนฺโต สคฺคปรายนา.
(Because the ways of the good are hard for the bad to follow) the destinations of the good and the bad on leaving this world are different: the bad go to hell, the good go to heaven.
ขุ. ชา. มหา. ๒๘/๔๓๕.
ตสฺมา หิ ธีโร อิธุปฏฺฐิตาสติ / กาเม จ ปาเป จ อเสวมาโน / สหาปิ ทุกฺเขน ชเหยฺย กาเม / ปฏิโสตคามีติ ตมาหุ ปุคฺคลํ.
Because the sage, with mindfulness established in this Dhamma and Discipline, does not indulge in sensual pleasures and evil, and abandons sensual pleasures together with suffering — he is called ‘one who goes against the stream’.
องฺ. จตุกฺก. ๒๑/๗.
ทุทฺททํ ททมานานํ ทุกฺกรํ กมฺมกุพฺพตํ / อสนฺโต นานุกุพฺพนฺติ สตํ ธมฺโม ทุรนฺวโย.
When the good give what is hard to give and do what is hard to do, the bad cannot follow them; for the ways of the good are hard for the bad to follow.
ขุ. ชา. ทุก. ๒๗/๖๓.
นิฏฺฐํ คโต อสนฺตาสี วีตตณฺโห อนงฺคโณ / อจฺฉินฺทิ ภวสลฺลานิ อนฺติโมยํ สมุสฺสโย.
One who has reached accomplishment (arahantship), who is fearless, free from craving, without the defilements that entice, who has cut the arrow that leads to existence — this body is his last.
ขุ. ธ. ๒๕/๖๓.
นิลฺโลลุโป นิกฺกุโห นิปฺปิปาโส / นิมฺมกฺโข นิทฺธนฺตกสาวโมโห / นิราสโส สพฺพโลเก ภวิตฺวา / เอโก จเร ขคฺควิสาณกปฺโป.
Not covetous, not deceitful, not thirsting, not disparaging, having removed delusion as if with astringent, without aspiration, having overcome the whole world, one should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn.

ปาปํ น กยิรา วจสา มนสา / กาเยน วา กิญฺจน สพฺพโลเก / กาเม ปหาย สติมา สมฺปชาโน / ทุกฺขํ น เสเวถ อนตฺถสญฺหิตํ.
One should do no evil, which is an entanglement in all the world, by body, speech or mind; mindful and clearly comprehending, having abandoned sensual pleasures, one should not pursue suffering bound up with what is useless.
สํ. ส. ๑๕/๔๒.
มทนิมฺมทนํ โสกนุทํ สํสารปริโมจนํ / สพฺพทุกฺขกฺขยํ มคฺคํ สกฺกจฺจํ ปฏิปชฺชถ.
Walk with reverence along the path that sobers intoxication, dispels sorrow, releases from the round of rebirth and is the end of all suffering.

มานํ ปหาย สุสมาหิตตฺโต / สุเจตโส สพฺพธิ วิปฺปมุตฺโต / เอโก อรญฺเญ วิหรํ อปฺปมตฺโต / ส มจฺจุเธยฺยสฺส ตเรยฺย ปารํ.
Whoever has abandoned conceit, is well established in himself, of good heart, liberated in every respect, dwelling alone in the forest and heedful — he may cross the realm of Death.
สํ. ส. ๒๕/๖.
โมสวชฺเช น นิยฺเยถ รูเป เสฺนหํ น กุพฺพเย / มานญฺจ ปริชาเนยฺย สาหสา วิรโต จเร.
One should not favour false speech, nor conceive affection for beauty; one should fully understand conceit and abstain from rashness.
ขุ. สุ. ๒๕/๕๑๘. ขุ. มหา. ๒๙/๕๑๗.
มาเนน วญฺจิตา เส สงฺขาเรสุ สงฺกิลิสฺสมานา เส / ลาภาลาเภน มถิตา สมาธึ นาธิคจฺฉนฺติ.
One deceived by conceit, defiled among conditioned things, oppressed by gain and loss of gain, does not attain concentration.
ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๒๘๓.
ยมฺหิ สจฺจญฺจ ธมฺโม จ อหึสา สญฺญโม ทโม / ส เว วนฺตมโล ธีโร โส เถโรติ ปวุจฺจติ.
In whom there are truth, righteousness, non-violence, restraint and self-control — that one, who is wise and free of stain, is called an elder.
ขุ. ธ. ๒๕/๕๐.
ยทา ทุกฺขํ ชรามรณนฺติ ปณฺฑิโต / อวิทฺทสู ยตฺถ สิตา ปุถุชฺชนา / ทุกฺขํ ปริญฺญาย สโต ว ฌายติ / ตโต รตึ ปรมตรํ น วินฺทติ.
When the wise one knows that old age and death are suffering, and fully understands the suffering on which ordinary people depend, dwelling mindful and meditative — then he finds no delight greater than that.
ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๔๔.
ยสฺส ราโค จ โทโส จ มาโน มกฺโข จ ปาติโต / สาสโปริว อารคฺคา ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ.
Whoever makes lust, hatred, conceit and disparagement fall away, as a mustard seed falls from the point of a needle — him I call a brahmin.
ขุ. ธ. ๒๕/๖๙.
ยสฺสาลยา น วิชฺชนฺติ อญฺญาย อกถงฺกถี / อมโตคธํ อนุปฺปตฺตํ ตมหํ พฺรูมิ พฺราหฺมณํ.
Whoever has no attachment, who having understood is free from doubt, who has plunged into the deathless and attained the goal — him I call a brahmin.
ขุ. ธ. ๒๕/๗๐.
เย เกจิ กาเมสุ อสญฺญตา ชนา / อวีตราคา อิธ กามโภคิโน / ปุนปฺปุนํ ชาติชรูปคา หิ เต. / ตณฺหาธิปนฺนา อนุโสตคามิโน.
Those people who are unrestrained in sensual pleasures, not free from lust, enjoying sensual pleasures in this world — they, overcome by craving, drifting along the stream (of craving), must come again and again to birth and old age.
องฺ. จตุกฺก. ๒๑/๗.
เย จ โข พาลา ทุมฺเมธา ทุมฺมนฺตี โมหปารุตา / ตาทิสา ตตฺถ รชฺชนฺติ มารกฺขิตฺตสฺมิ พนฺธเน.
Those who are foolish, of poor wisdom, of evil intent and enveloped in delusion — such people become caught in the bond that Māra has laid.
ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๑๒.
เย จ สีเลน สมฺปนฺนา ปญฺญายูปสเม รตา / อารกา วิรตา ธีรา น โหนฺติ ปรปตฺติยา.
Those wise ones who are endowed with virtue and delight in peace through wisdom — such wise ones, far removed from evil, need not believe others.
ขุ. ชา. จตุกฺก. ๒๗/๑๔๓.
เย ฌานปสุตา ธีรา เนกฺขมฺมูปสเม รตา / เทวาปิ เตสํ ปิหยนฺติ สมฺพุทฺธานํ สตีมตํ.
Those wise ones who are devoted to meditation and delight in the peace born of renunciation — even the gods are pleased with such wise, awakened and mindful ones.
ขุ. ธ. ๒๕/๓๙.
เยสํ ราโค จ โทโส จ อวิชฺชา จ วิราชิตา / ตาที ตตฺถ น รชฺชนฺติ ฉินฺนสุตฺตา อพนฺธนา.
Whoever is liberated from lust, hatred and ignorance — he is steadfast, his tether is cut, he has no bond and is not attached there.
ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๑๒.
โย จ คุตฺเตน จิตฺเตน สุณาติ ชินสาสนํ / เขเปตฺวา อาสเว สพฺเพ สจฺฉิกตฺวา อกุปฺปตํ / ปปฺปุยฺย ปรมํ สนฺตึ ปรินิพฺพาติ อนาสโว.
Whoever, with a guarded mind, listens to the Conqueror’s teaching — he brings all the taints to an end, realizes the unshakeable state, attains the supreme peace, and, free from taints, is fully quenched.
ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๒๓.
โรสโก กทริโย จ ปาปิจฺโฉ มจฺฉรี สโฐ / อหิริโก อโนตฺตปฺปี ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ.
Whoever is irritable, grasping, of evil wishes, stingy, boastful, without shame and without fear of wrongdoing — know that such a one is base.
ขุ. สุ. ๒๕/๓๕๑.
ลาภกมฺยา น สิกฺขติ อลาเภ จ น กุปฺปติ / อวิรุทฺโธ จ ตณฺหาย รเส จ นานุคิชฺฌติ.
The wise do not study out of desire for gain, are not resentful at loss of gain, are not moved by craving to like or dislike, and are not attached to tastes.
ขุ. สุ. ๒๕/๕๐๑. ขุ. มหา. ๒๙/๒๘๔.
สงฺขาย โลกสฺมิ ปโรปรานิ / ยสฺสิญฺชิตํ นตฺถิ กุหิญฺจิ โลเก / สนฺโต วิธูโม อนีโฆ นิราโส / อตาริ โส ชาติชรนฺติ พฺรูมิ.
Whoever, having considered the high and the low in the world, is not shaken by anything whatever in the world — I say that he is peaceful, without the smoke (of defilement), without suffering, free from craving, and has crossed beyond birth and old age.

สพฺพทา เว สุขํ เสติ พฺราหฺมโณ ปรินิพฺพุโต / โย น ลิมฺปติ กาเมสุ สีติภูโต นิรูปธิ.
Whoever is cooled, without substrates, unattached to sensual pleasures — he is a brahmin, quenched, and dwells in happiness always.
สํ. ส. ๑๕/๓๑๒.
สพฺพโส นามรูปสฺมึ ยสฺส นตฺถิ มมายิตํ / อสตา จ น โสจติ ส เว ภิกฺขูติ วุจฺจติ.
Whoever has no sense of ‘mine’ towards name and form in any way, and does not grieve over name and form that does not exist — he indeed is called a monk.
ขุ. ธ. ๒๕/๖๕.
สพฺพา อาสตฺติโย เฉตฺวา วิเนยฺย หทเย ทรํ / อุปสนฺโต สุขํ เสติ สนฺตึ ปปฺปุยฺย เจตโส.
Whoever has cut all entanglements and dispelled anxiety of mind — he has reached peace of mind and dwells in happiness, at rest.
องฺ. ติก. ๒๐/๑๗๕.
สพฺเพสุ กาเมสุ โย วีตราโค / อากิญฺจญฺญํ นิสฺสิโต หิตฺวมญฺญํ / สญฺญาวิโมกฺเข ปรเมธิมุตฺโต / ติฏฺเฐยฺย โส ตตฺถ อนานุยายี.
Whoever is free from attachment to all sensual pleasures, has passed beyond the other jhānas, depends on the jhāna of the base of nothingness and inclines his mind to the noble liberation of perception — he may abide in that jhāna of nothingness without falling away.

ส วีตราโค ส วิเนยฺย โทสํ / เมตฺตจิตฺตํ ภาเวยฺย อปฺปมาณํ / สพฺเพสุ ภูเตสุ นิธาย ทณฺฑํ / อนินฺทิโต พฺรหฺมมุเปติ ฐานํ.
One who is free from lust and has removed hatred should develop a mind of boundless loving-kindness; having laid aside violence towards all beings, he is not blamed and goes to a noble state.
ขุ. ชา. จตฺตาฬีส. ๒๗/๕๔๒.
โส อุภนฺตมภิญฺญาย มชฺเฌ มนฺตา น ลิมฺปติ / ตํ พฺรูมิ มหาปุริโสติ โส อิธ สิพฺพินิมจฺจคา.
That one (who has quenched the defilements and is beyond wavering), having known both ends, is not attached to the middle through wisdom; him I call a great man; he has abandoned the craving that stitches the mind in this world.

โสกปริเทวมจฺฉรํ / น ชหนฺติ คิทฺธา มมายิเต / ตสฺมา มุนโย ปริคฺคหํ / หิตฺวา อจรึสุ เขมทสฺสิโน.
One attached to what is regarded as ‘mine’ cannot abandon sorrow, lamentation and stinginess; therefore the sages, seeing security, leave behind possessiveness.

โสจติ ปุตฺเตหิ ปุตฺติมา / โคมิโก โคหิ ตเถว โสจติ / อุปธีหิ นรสฺส โสจนา / น หิ โส โสจติ โย นิรูปธิ.
One who has children grieves because of children; one who has cattle grieves likewise because of cattle; a person grieves because of substrates; one who has no substrates does not grieve at all.
