ปมาทวรรค — หมวดประมาท ๓ บท
โย จ ปุพฺเพ ปมชฺชิตฺวา ปจฺฉา โส นปฺปมชฺชติ / โสมํ โลกํ ปภาเสติ อพฺภา มุตฺโต ว จนฺทิมา.
One who was heedless before but is heedless no more illuminates this world like the moon freed from clouds.
มัชฌิมนิกาย มัชฌิมปัณณาสก์ (ม. ม. ๑๓/๔๘๖.)
พหุมฺปิ เจ สํหิตํ ภาสมาโน / น ตกฺกโร โหติ นโร ปมตฺโต / โคโปว คาโว คณยํ ปเรสํ / น ภาควา สามญฺญสฺส โหติ.
Though one may recite much of the Buddha’s word, if one is heedless and does not act according to it, one has no share in the fruits of the ascetic life, like a cowherd counting others’ cattle.
ขุททกนิกาย ธรรมบท (ขุ. ธ. ๒๕/๑๗.)
ยญฺหิ กิจฺจํ ตทปวิทฺธํ อกิจฺจํ ปน กยิรติ / อุนฺนฬานํ ปมตฺตานํ เตสํ วฑฺฒนฺติ อาสวา.
One who abandons what should be done and does what should not be done, being conceited and heedless — his taints increase.

Whoever has done evil but abandons it by doing good illuminates this world like the moon freed from clouds.
มัชฌิมนิกาย มัชฌิมปัณณาสก์ (ม. ม. ๑๒/๔๘๗.)
มธุวา มญฺญตี พาโล ยาว ปาปํ น ปจฺจติ, / ยทา จ ปจฺจตี ปาปํ อถ พาโล ทุกฺขํ นิคจฺฉติ.
As long as evil has not ripened, the fool thinks it sweet; but when evil ripens, then the fool meets with suffering.

สเจ ภายถ ทุกฺขสฺส สเจ โว ทุกฺขมปฺปิยํ / มา กตฺถ ปาปกํ กมฺมํ อาวี วา ยทิ วา รโห.
If you fear suffering, if you do not love suffering, then do no evil deed, whether in the open or in secret.

The wise and clever one establishes himself even with little capital, as one kindles a small fire.
ขุททกนิกาย ชาดก เอกนิบาต (ขุ. ชา. เอก. ๒๗/๒.)
อโมฆํ ทิวสํ กยิรา อปฺเปน พหุเกน วา / ยํ ยํ วิวหเต รตฺติ ตทูนนฺตสฺส ชีวิตํ.
One should not let days and nights pass in vain, without gain small or great; for the life of one whom the days and nights pass by is diminished by that much.
ขุททกนิกาย เถรคาถา (ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๓๕.)
อุฏฺฐาตา กมฺมเธยฺเยสุ อปฺปมตฺโต วิธานวา / สมํ กปฺเปติ ชีวิตํ สมฺภตํ อนุรกฺขติ.
One who is diligent in his duties, heedful, knows how to manage, and lives within his means, preserves the wealth he has gained.

 คำอธิบาย
One who desires lasting happiness should shun evil friends, associate only with the highest persons, and abide by their counsel.

ยาทิสํ กุรุเต มิตฺตํ ยาทิสญฺจูปเสวติ, / โสปิ ตาทิสโก โหติ สหวาโส หิ ตาทิโส.
 คำอธิบาย
Whatever kind of person one makes a friend and keeps company with, such a person one becomes; for living together makes one so.

สทฺเธน จ เปสเลน จ / ปญฺญวตา พหุสฺสุเตน จ / สขิตํ หิ กเรยฺย ปณฺฑิโต. / ภทฺโท สปฺปุริเสหิ สงฺคโม.
 คำอธิบาย
A wise person should make friends with those who have faith, whose virtue is dear to them, who are wise and learned; for association with the good brings prosperity.

When one gives a gift among the excellent, excellent merit grows — and excellent life, beauty, fame, honour, happiness and strength.

อคฺคทายี วรทายี เสฏฺฐทายี จ โย นโร / ทีฆายุ ยสวา โหติ ยตฺถ ยตฺถูปปชฺชติ.
One who gives what is excellent, what is good and what is best, is long-lived and honoured wherever he is born.
อังคุตตรนิกาย ปัญจกนิบาต (องฺ ปญฺจก. ๒๒/๕๖.)
ปุพฺเพ ทานาทิกํ ทตฺวา อิทานิ ลภตี สุขํ / มูเลว สิญฺจิตํ โหติ อคฺเค จ ผลทายกํ.
First give gifts and the like; thus one gains happiness now, as watering the root yields fruit at the tip.
