Virtue is the first support, the mother of all good qualities, the chief of all things; therefore one should purify one’s virtue.
ขุททกนิกาย เถรคาถา (ขุ. เถร. ๒๖/๓๕๘.)
อวณฺณญฺจ อกิตฺติญฺจ ทุสฺสีโล ลภเต นโร / วณฺณํ กิตฺตึ ปสํสญฺจ สทา ลภติ สีลวา.
The immoral person receives blame and loss of reputation; the virtuous person always receives fame and praise.

The virtuous gain many friends through their restraint; the unvirtuous, behaving badly, are estranged from their friends.

ธัมมวรรค — หมวดธรรม ๔ บท
ขตฺติยา พฺราหฺมณา เวสฺสา สุทฺทา จณฺฑาลปุกฺกุสา / อิธ ธมฺมํ จริตฺวาน ภวนฺติ ติทิเว สมา.
Kshatriyas, brahmins, vaishyas, shudras, outcastes and low workers, having practised the Dhamma in this world, become equal in the heaven of the Thirty-three.

Whoever desires divine wealth, life, fame and happiness should refrain from evils and practise the threefold good conduct.

นิกฺกุหา นิลฺลปา ธีรา อตฺถทฺธา สุสมาหิตา / เต เว ธมฺเม วิรูหนฺติ สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธเทสิเต.
One who is honest, not a babbler, prudent, not arrogant, of steady mind — such a one shines in the Dhamma taught by the Perfectly Enlightened One.

กุหา ถทฺธา ลปา สิงฺคี อุนฺนฬา จาสมาหิตา / น เต ธมฺเม วิรูหนฺติ สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธเทสิเต.
The deceitful, the arrogant, the babbler, the boastful, the conceited and the unsettled do not grow in the Dhamma taught by the Perfectly Enlightened One.

กิเลสวรรค — หมวดกิเลส ๒ บท
โกธสฺส วิสมูลสฺส มธุรคฺคสฺส พฺราหฺมณ / วธํ อริยา ปสํสนฺติ ตญฺหิ เฉตฺวา น โสจติ.
Brahmin! The noble ones praise the one who slays anger, whose root is poison and whose tip is honey; for having cut off that anger, one does not sorrow.
สังยุตตนิกาย สคาถวรรค (สํ. ส. ๑๕/๒๓๖.)
โลโภ โทโส จ โมโห จ ปุริสํ ปาปเจตสํ / หึสนฺติ อตฺตสมฺภูตา ตจสารํว สมฺผลํ.
Greed, hatred and delusion, born of oneself, harm the person of evil mind, as the bamboo’s own flower kills the bamboo.

ปุญญวรรค — หมวดบุญ ๓ บท
ปุญฺญญฺเจ ปุริโส กยิรา กยิราเถนํ ปุนปฺปุนํ / ตมฺหิ ฉนฺทํ กยิราถ สุโข ปุญฺญสฺส อุจฺจโย.
If a person would make merit, let him do it again and again; let him take delight in it, for the accumulation of merit brings happiness.

มาวมญฺเญถ ปุญฺญสฺส น มตฺตํ อาคมิสฺสติ / อุทพินฺทุนิปาเตน อุทกุมฺโภปิ ปูรติ / อาปูรติ ธีโร ปุญฺญสฺส โถกํ โถกํปิ อาจินํ.
One should not despise merit, thinking ‘it is small, it will not come to me’; as a water-pot is filled by falling drops, so the wise one, accumulating merit little by little, is filled with merit.

สหาโย อตฺถชาตสฺส โหติ มิตฺตํ ปุนปฺปุนํ / สยํ กตานิ ปุญฺญานิ ตํ มิตฺตํ สมฺปรายิกํ.
A companion is the friend of one whose needs arise again and again; but the merit one has made oneself will be one’s friend in the world beyond.

วาจาวรรค — หมวดวาจา ๓ บท
กลฺยาณิเมว มุญฺเจยฺย น หิ มุญฺเจยฺย ปาปิกํ / โมกฺโข กลฺยาณิยา สาธุ มุตฺวา ตปฺปติ ปาปิกํ.
One should speak only pleasant words, never evil words; speaking pleasant words brings about benefit, while one who speaks evil words comes to grief.
ขุททกนิกาย ชาดก เอกนิบาต (ขุ. ชา. เอก. ๒๗/๒๘.)
ตเมว วาจํ ภาเสยฺย ยายตฺตานํ น ตาปเย / ปเร จ น วิหึเสยฺย สา เว วาจา สุภาสิตา.
One should speak words that bring no torment to oneself and no harm to others; such speech is well spoken.
ขุททกนิกาย สุตตนิบาต (ขุ. สุ. ๒๕/๔๑๑.)
นาติเวลํ ปภาเสยฺย น ตุณฺหี สพฺพทา สิยา / อวิกิณฺณํ มิตํ วาจํ ปตฺเต กาเล อุทีริเย.
One should not talk beyond the proper time, nor always keep silent; when the time comes, one should speak in moderation, without rambling.
