Oneself indeed is one’s own refuge; who else could be one’s refuge? With oneself well tamed, one gains a refuge hard to gain.

There is no love equal to that for oneself, no wealth equal to grain, no light equal to wisdom; and rain indeed is the greatest pool.

Be heedful, mindful, and virtuous, monks, establish your intentions well, and guard your own minds.

Delight in heedfulness; guard your own minds. Lift yourselves out of this bog, like an elephant pulls himself out of the mud.

Even a great army fighting together with its king cannot gain the benefit that a good person with patience gains; (for) the enmities of one whose strength is patience are stilled.

For one whose mind is not soaked with lust, whose heart is not struck by hatred, who has abandoned both merit and evil, who is awake — there is no fear.

For one who has gone out (attained final Nibbāna) there is no measure; that by which one might speak of him no longer exists for him. When all phenomena (the aggregates and so on) have been removed, all ways of speaking (of what he is) are removed as well.

One should remove all craving that clings — above, below, across and in the middle; for whatever in the world one clings to, by that very thing Māra follows one.

One who ponders deep questions in his mind, who does no evil deed that brings no benefit, who does not abandon the path of benefit when its time comes — the wise call such a one a person of wisdom.

A fool, though he has rank, is the slave of the wise; when matters arise, whatever a clever person handles adroitly, the fool falls into confusion over.

One who is free from lust and has removed hatred should develop a mind of boundless loving-kindness; having laid aside violence towards all beings, he is not blamed and goes to a noble state.

At all times, one who associates with the base becomes base; associating with equals one does not decline; associating with the noble one quickly rises; therefore one should associate with those higher than oneself.
